What is Telegram and Telegram features? A quick guide
Telegram the fast and secure messaging platform is a popular cross-platform messaging app that is widely used because it offers some enhanced privacy and encryption features as well as support for large group chat features.
It also has no ties to other social media platforms (both Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp are owned by Facebook, for example), which makes the service more appealing to some.
The app is multiplatform, with versions of the app available for iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, and Linux. You can also access the Telegram from a web browser.
Telegram was founded by Russian social media entrepreneur Pavel Durov, and the service is free to use. There are lot of Telegram features you can use professionally.
Telegram’s signature feature is its end-to-end encryption, but it’s important to be aware that not all communication within Telegram has this level of privacy.
Most messages use client-to-server encryption, which is less secure than end-to-end, but allows you to access your Telegram chats from other devices, including the web.
Telegram pros and cons
If you already use another app for one-on-one and group chats, you might not find Telegram compelling enough to use it. But if you are looking for a highly secure messaging app that has rock-solid security and privacy, Telegram features can fit the bill.
Here are some pros and cons to using Telegram on the basis of Telegram features.
Advantage of using Telegram
- End-to-end encryption: When using the Secret Chat mode, communication is completely encrypted from end to end, rendering communication essentially bulletproof. You can also get end-to-end encryption in apps like WhatsApp and Signal.
- Self-destructing messages: Secret messages can be configured to self-destruct after a set period of time, making it even more secure. This is similar to what you can do in apps like Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger. This Telegram features make it unique as well as cons.
- Large file sizes: Telegram supports file attachments up to 2 GB in size. This is one area where Telegram has virtually all other messaging apps beat.
- Only Skype comes even remotely close, limiting you to 300 MB files. Most apps are much more limiting – WhatsApp is just 16 MB, for example.
Cons of Telegram
- Limited user base: While Telegram has several hundred million active monthly users, it’s still significantly smaller than the 1 billion-plus active user bases on WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. That means there’s a good chance your friends and contacts are not using the app.
- New user announcements may violate privacy: One of the main reasons many people join Telegram is to be able to send secure and private messages. That’s why some Telegram features frustrating that your contacts already on the app get notified when you join.
- It’s a gathering place for conspiracy theorists and hate groups: As mainstream social media services increasingly take down Q-Anon groups, neo-Nazis, and other hate groups and conspiracy theorists.
- Telegram has become an attractive gathering place for many of these groups because of the enhanced security and permissive content policies, though Telegram has ramped up efforts to disable accounts run by hate groups and extremists.

Video editing with color correction
Telegram offers users the option to edit pictures and videos before sending them. However, the editor here isn’t just a basic crop-and-flip tool, it’s a full-fledged editing utility with options like RGB (red, green, blue) that lets you correct your videos in real-time.
You can also adjust elements like saturation, contrast, exposure and more. Video editing like Telegram features make it more easy to use.
To do this, select a video to send and you can find options to crop, tune and add elements below it. Set your desired adjustments and tap the send button to send the video.
Telegram also supports proxy servers, allowing users to hide their IP address by connecting to a custom proxy server. It works similar to how a VPN connection works and is only for advanced users who know what they are doing.
While a proxy is not as secure as a VPN connection, it has the advantage of not taking a toll on your internet speed. This is Telegram features that make it unique.
To set up a proxy server on Telegram, users can go to Settings and choose Data & Storage. Over here, scroll down until you find the Proxy Settings panel, where you can turn it on and enter your server details.
Telegram’s Saved Messages feature is quite handy, for saving only important text messages. Users can also use this space to save all kinds of important files to be stored on Telegram’s secure cloud and then accessed from any device where you are signed in. However, users can also set a reminder within the saved message space.
To do this, go to the Telegram hamburger menu and select Saved Messages. Here you can type your reminder message. Instead of pausing sending, long press the send button to select ‘Set reminder’. You can choose when you want Telegram to be reminded of the task.
Slow mode in groups
Not everyone wants to do any group administration with constant messaging even though there are few members in the group with constant messaging. This is particularly troubling in Telegram where groups can join as many as 200,000 members. This Telegram features make it popular among other platform.
However, Telegram allows a unique solution for this. You can set up slow mode in your groups where users can only send one message per set amount of time. For example, if you set it to 30 seconds, all users will only be able to send one message every 30 seconds.
To set it up, tap on the group name, and select the edit icon (shaped like a pencil). Go into Permissions and find the Slow Mode setting near the bottom of the page.
If you are the admin, you can also set up quizzes and polls with Telegram groups. These work similar to Twitter polls. You can set up anonymous or visual polling. Telegram also allows you to set up quiz polls where only one answer is correct.
To set up a poll in your Telegram group, head to the group and hit the Attach icon (shaped like a paper clip). Here scroll down to the icon below your recent photos, and select the poll icon. These Telegram features can help you to know your audience interest better.
How many of these features did you know about? Note that Telegram is expected to add a bunch of more features soon, including paid features for premium and power users, in the near future. However, all current features will remain free to use for all users.
